Abstract
The article focuses on the significance of the second edition of the *National School Library Standards for Learners, School Librarians, and School Libraries* in preparing future school librarians amid increasing challenges such as legislative attacks on intellectual freedom and the elimination of librarian positions. It highlights how the updated standards emphasize advocacy, provide enhanced assessment tools, and strengthen the integration of learner, librarian, and library standards to support competency-based instruction across grade levels. The article also discusses practical strategies for library and information science (LIS) educators to embed these standards into coursework, including assignments on standards mapping, advocacy toolkit development, and library program evaluation, all aimed at fostering professional identity and leadership skills in preservice librarians. Ultimately, the second edition serves as a timely, research-informed framework to equip school librarians to advocate effectively and lead confidently in evolving educational environments.
