Abstract
Numerical solutions of the time-varying, turbulent flow through a St. Jude bileaflet valve in the aortic position have been obtained using the commercially available FIDAP package. To ease computational complexity, these initial simulations were performed in two dimensions with rigidly fixed leaflets. A numerical simulation such as this allows the quantitative examination of the cumulative effects of elevated shear stress as a blood platelet passes through the valve region, and this can be used to indicate the likelihood of stress-induced platelet activation due to flow produced by the artificial valve.
